Let's Talk - Brushes, how and why to clean them
Hello ladies,
Today I want to talk to you about makeup brushes, especially why and how to clean them.
If you are just a bit passionate about makeup or you wear it on a day to day basis, then you are the proud owner of a couple of makeup brushes.
Why should you clean your brushes?
From personal experience, I know that most of you are doing your makeup in the bathroom after the morning shower. So let me ask you a question!
What do you think happens, to a foundation brush, after you use it and leave it in your damp bathroom?
All the dust and bacteria that floats in the air will find a nice and welcoming breeding enviroment in the bristles of your brush. The next morning you use the same brush to apply your foundation, and transfering the bacteria on to your face.
And then, guess what? You start breaking out and wonder why.
Hopefully, this small horror story, will motivate you enough to start cleaning your brushes on a regular basis, and store them somewhere else than your bathroom.
How often should you clean them?
❖ all brushes used for cream or liquid products, like the brushes for foundation, concealers, cream eyeshadow, eyliner or lipstick, should be cleaned after every use.
❖ powder products brushes, like eyeshadows and powder can be clean every 2-3 days
❖ once a week you need to show them some TLC and wash ALL your brushes.
How to wash your brushes?
I am sure that all of us saw the ad for the electrical makeup brush cleaner, the small gadget that is suppose to make washing your brushes a breeze.
Well forget about it! It does not work. Just take a look at the pictures below.
The best way to clean them is with baby wash or baby shampoo, because is milder and softer than other washes.
Move the wet soaped brush on the surface of the brush egg or on the palm of your hand, with a circular or front-to-back motion, depending on the type of brush (round or flat), until the foam is nice and clean. Rinse with luke warm water until the water is clean.
Place them on a clean towel with the bristles lower than the handles, at a small angle so the water can drain out and not affect the glue in the handle.
On a positive note, if you already bought the electric makeup brush cleaner, you can use it for its drying function and spin dry your brushes.
I do not recommend doing this regulary, because spin drying can damage the shape of your brush.
Air dry them over night and they will last you a life time.
